Detroit Jazz Fest’s Week at WSU gets the ball rolling (via Detroit Free Press)

Though the Detroit Jazz Festival is still five weeks away on Labor Day weekend, a number of related events are starting to arrive on the calendar this week. First up is J.C. Heard Jazz Week at Wayne State University, an intensive camp for students with three national artists serving as educators-in-residence: trumpeter Theo Crocker, drummer Shannon Powell and vocalist Stephanie Fisher.

Croker, an exceptional trumpeter who mixes fire and lyricism in equal proportion, will appear with Detroit Jazz Festival All-Stars on Wednesday at Cliff Bell’s starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by a jam session from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. that will bring students and Jazz Week mentors into the mix. The all-stars include tenor saxophonist Chris Collins (the artistic director of the jazz festival and head of jazz studies at Wayne State), vibraphonist Rob Pipho, bassist Marion Hayden and drummer David Taylor.  2030 Park Ave., Detroit. 313-961-2543.
