Glasper, Helfer and Sidran kick off fall season in jazz (via Chicago Tribune)

Yes, the Chicago Jazz Festival ended last weekend, but the fall season already is briskly underway.

Robert Glasper Trio: The question is which Robert Glasper will show up. When so inclined, Glasper can be a provocatively engaging jazz pianist, his improvisations defying conventional concepts of melodic development, song structure, backbeat — you-name it. That’s the Glasper who intrigued listeners before he became an R&B star. More recent visits, however, have shown Glasper playing to the widest possible audience and, therefore, diluting his work for maximum accessibility, not a great formula for a major Chicago jazz venue. In any event, one reasonably can expect Glasper to play music from his forthcoming album, “ArtScience.”
