Hampton Jazz Festival ends with a sold-out house party (via Daily Press)

Frankie was in the house on Sunday, and the house was happy.

The Hampton Coliseum concluded the 48th annual Hampton Jazz Festival with yet another house party hosted by Frankie Beverly.

Sunday’s first act, the vocal group The Unifics, comes from Newport News. The third act, “American Idol” champ and Grammy winner Fantasia, has family on the Peninsula and had a large kin contingent in the audience. In between them was the trio of guitarist Norman Brown, sax man Kirk Whalum and trumpeter Rick Braun, one of the best pure jazz acts in this jazz festival.

Each act put on an energetic and charismatic performance.

Even so, there could be no mistaking that the evening belonged to Frankie Beverly and Maze.
