Jazz Community Helps Raises Funds for AHS Jazz Ensemble (via NBC29)

Musicians are coming together to help students in the Albemarle High School (AHS) Jazz Ensemble get to a national competition.

The AHS Jazz Ensemble never thought it would get a shot at going to Swing Central Jazz, a student workshop and competition that is part of the Savannah Music Festival in Georgia. The students practice a lot, and they have won some regional competitions, but they weren’t confident about being one of the 12 qualifying school bands.

“I was positive there was no chance of getting in,” said AHS Jazz Band Director Greg Thomas.

But when they did make the cut, surprising everyone, they quickly realized they needed to raise money to make the trip.

“My job is always logistics. You have to get the kids there and feed them and put them in hotels. So about the second minute after I realized we were in I had to start thinking about how to get them to Savannah,” Thomas said.

The band turned to the jazz community of Charlottesville, and put together an all-star evening of entertainment to raise money.

The end result was a standing room only crowd at The Southern Music Hall Sunday night.
