Tucked away in the Jay Street pedestrian mall in downtown Schenectady is a long-standing concert series that is a showcase for Capital District area jazz musicians who play concerts on Thursday afternoons. It’s a popular series that started in 1994, so it isn’t a lark.

The 2016 season of Jazz on Jay opens Thursday afternoon. It runs each Thursday, noon to 1:30 p.m., in the Jay Street pedestrian block and is held at the same location through Sept. 1. The kickoff act this year is singer Jeanne O’Connor, backed by the veteran area piano wizard and bandleader Azzaam Hameed. The rain location each week is Robb Alley, a small performance venue at Proctors, a short jaunt across State Street.

Each year, Jazz on Jay presents a diverse lineup — young bands starting out, tried-and-true acts that have been on the local jazz scene for some time, and groups that are a mixture of jazz and other genres.
