Patti Austin headlines Jazz on the River in Trenton (via Detroit Free Press)

Patti Austin can sing pretty much anything she sets her mind to — R&B, jazz, soul, pop, a fusion of all of these — and do it all with a highly developed sense of individual style.

Austin headlines the 21st annual Jazz on the River festival that unfolds Saturday and Sunday in Trenton in an idyllic park alongside the Detroit River. Austin brings the festival to a close beginning at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The festival, which emphasizes R&B-jazz crossover, fusion and instrumental pop, also features a deep slate of other headliners, including guitarist-vocalist Jonathan Butler, flutist (and festival music director) Alexander Zonjic with special guest singer Maysa, saxophonist Kim Waters and “American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard.

Among the other performers are Detroit blues great Thornetta Davis, saxophonist Phil Denny and Lady Sunshine and the X Band.
